South Korea has selected consortia led by LG AI Research, SK Telecom, and Upstage to advance to the final stage of its national project to develop homegrown foundation models.
Why it matters
The decision accelerates South Korea’s push for AI sovereignty and puts significant public resources behind domestic alternatives to U.S. and Chinese frontier models.
South Korea has advanced three consortia — led by LG AI Research, SK Telecom, and Upstage — to the final round of its sovereign AI foundation-model program. A fourth team was eliminated in the latest selection round.
The national project aims to develop competitive homegrown large language and multimodal models that reduce reliance on foreign systems. Finalists will receive further government support and compute resources as they move toward production-ready systems.
The move is part of a broader regional trend in which mid-sized economies are treating domestic model capability as a strategic priority rather than purely a commercial one.
