OpenAIPrivacyEnterpriseOpenAI Introduces Zero Data Retention Mode for Privacy
August 21, 20262 min read
OpenAI has launched a Zero Data Retention (ZDR) option under which prompts and responses are not saved after a task finishes, no employees can view the content, and data is not used for training unless a customer explicitly opts in.
Why it matters
The feature directly addresses enterprise and regulated-industry concerns about data leakage and training on customer inputs, a persistent barrier to deeper AI adoption.
OpenAI has introduced a Zero Data Retention (ZDR) mode designed to strengthen user and enterprise privacy. Under ZDR, the company does not save a customer’s prompts or the model’s responses once a task is completed. No OpenAI employee can view the content, and unless an organization actively opts in, none of the data is used to train models.
The feature is aimed at customers in regulated industries and any organization that has been hesitant to send sensitive material to external AI systems. By offering a clear technical guarantee around non-retention, OpenAI is trying to remove one of the remaining adoption blockers for high-stakes use cases.
ZDR sits alongside existing enterprise controls and is likely to become a standard expectation rather than a differentiator over time.
