OpenAIGPT-6PricingOpenAI launches GPT-6 Sol and Luna at half the price of GPT-5.6 tiers

OpenAI released GPT-6 Sol and GPT-6 Luna on September 22, cutting API prices 50% versus GPT-5.6 promotional rates. Sol is $2/$10 per million tokens; Luna is $0.10/$0.50. Both inherit core advances from GPT-6 Astra and target coding, agentic and high-volume work.
Why it matters
Frontier labs are racing to the middle of the price curve. After Grok 4.7 held $2/$6 and Anthropic cut Opus, OpenAI is making mid-tier GPT-6 models dramatically cheaper — shifting the default economics for everyday production use.
OpenAI expanded the GPT-6 family on September 22 with two lower-cost models: GPT-6 Sol and GPT-6 Luna. Both are described as cut from the same cloth as flagship GPT-6 Astra, with improvements in reasoning, coding, computer use and alignment relative to their GPT-5.6 predecessors.
API pricing is halved versus GPT-5.6 promotional rates. Sol costs $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens. Luna costs $0.10 input and $0.50 output. Cache reads remain heavily discounted. Both carry a 1.05-million-token context window.
Sol is positioned for complex coding and agentic workflows; Luna for high-volume tasks such as summarization and extraction. The models are available in ChatGPT Work and Codex for paid plans, and via the API as gpt-6-sol and gpt-6-luna. Free and Go users can access Luna in the desktop app.
