Mistral launched a public preview of Mistral Large 4 (Le Chonk), a 1.05-trillion-parameter natively multimodal MoE with 49B active parameters, trained from scratch on ~3,800 Nvidia Grace Blackwell GPUs in European data centers. API is live now; weights due by end of October. Mistral claims strong cyber scores where some closed models refuse the tasks.
Why it matters
Europe’s leading lab is putting a trillion-parameter open-weight model on the table with a sovereignty pitch — trained in Europe, weights forthcoming — and leaning into cybersecurity as the wedge where closed models refuse to play.
Mistral AI announced a public preview of Mistral Large 4 on October 6, unofficially ML4 and officially nicknamed “le Chonk.” The model is a 1.05-trillion-parameter natively multimodal mixture-of-experts system with about 49 billion active parameters per token, a vision encoder, and a 1-million-token context window.
It was trained from scratch on roughly 3,800 Nvidia Grace Blackwell GPUs in Mistral’s own European data centers. The preview API is live on Mistral Studio (reported pricing around $1.36 per million input / $4.18 per million output tokens). Weights are scheduled for release by the end of October after a testing window with developers, cybersecurity partners, and authorities.
Mistral positions ML4 as competitive with the strongest global open models and ahead of any open-weight model developed in the US or Europe, with particular strength in coding, agentic workflows, cybersecurity, finance, and visual grounding. On cyber benchmarks Mistral reports high scores (including ~82% on a vulnerability-reproduce-and-patch style test) and notes that some closed frontier models score near zero because they refuse the task. The pitch is open weights plus European infrastructure for customers who want control and sovereignty.
