GoogleGeminiAgentsEnterpriseGoogle Cloud launches Gemini agent as a universal enterprise work agent
October 8, 20262 min read
At Gemini at Work 2026, Google Cloud unveiled Gemini agent — a single universal agent for work that takes objectives, plans tasks, connects to Workspace, Microsoft 365, Slack, Jira and more, and can spin up coworker agents with their own email identities. Private preview for enterprise now; broader Workspace availability coming.
Why it matters
Google is productizing the “one agent for the whole job” pitch at Fortune-100 scale, with model routing (Gemini + Claude), cost controls, and enterprise identity/governance built in — a direct challenge to OpenAI dots and Meta Muse in the office.
Google Cloud announced the Gemini agent on October 8 at Gemini at Work 2026: a single universal agent for enterprise work that can answer questions, do knowledge work, create media, and write and run code from one interface.
Users give it objectives rather than step-by-step instructions. The agent plans the work, uses skills and tools, connects to company systems (Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, Slack, Jira, Confluence, Git, BigQuery, Databricks, Postgres, Snowflake, Salesforce, ServiceNow, and more), and returns finished outputs in documents, email, and developer environments. It chooses the best model for each task — currently Gemini and Anthropic Claude, with more models planned — and runs under enterprise identity, budget, and policy controls. Coworker agents can get dedicated @agents.company.com identities and persistent storage.
The agent is in private preview for enterprise customers; Google says broader availability for Workspace customers on select Business and Enterprise plans is coming. Google cited nearly 90% of Fortune 100 companies as Gemini Enterprise customers.
