Anthropic confirmed a Claude outage on August 16 that lasted roughly 42 minutes, affecting Claude.ai, Claude Code, Claude Cowork, and the platform API due to authentication and request failures.
Why it matters
Even brief outages at a frontier lab highlight the operational concentration risk as more enterprises rely on a small number of AI providers for core workflows.
Anthropic experienced a service disruption on August 16, 2026 that lasted approximately 42 minutes. The outage began around 21:58 UTC and affected Claude.ai, Claude Code, Claude Cowork, and platform.claude.com. Users reported login failures and stalled requests until service was largely restored around 22:40 UTC.
Anthropic attributed the incident to an authentication-related issue that spread across services. While relatively short, the outage is a reminder that even the most advanced AI platforms remain subject to conventional infrastructure and reliability challenges.
As more companies build critical workflows on top of a handful of frontier model providers, the operational resilience of those providers is becoming a material risk consideration.
