Anthropic released Claude Haiku 5.5, its cheapest and fastest small model, at $0.10 per million input and $0.50 per million output for prompts up to 100K tokens — matching OpenAI’s GPT-6 Luna and about 90% below Haiku 4.5 on short prompts. Sonnet 5.5 cache-read prices were also halved.
Why it matters
The cheap-tier war is now explicit. Same-day as GPT-6’s mass ChatGPT rollout, Anthropic prices Haiku at Luna parity and positions it as the high-volume subagent for Opus/Sonnet stacks — the cost layer that makes multi-agent systems practical.
Anthropic released Claude Haiku 5.5 on October 7, calling it the cheapest, fastest, and most capable small model it has shipped.
For prompts up to 100,000 tokens (about 90% of prior Haiku traffic), pricing is $0.10 per million input tokens and $0.50 per million output — 90% below Haiku 4.5 and aligned with OpenAI’s GPT-6 Luna. Above 100K tokens, rates rise to $0.50 / $2.50. Anthropic estimates roughly 75% lower run cost on average once token use is factored in. The company also halved Claude Sonnet 5.5 cache-read prices, which it says can cut many agentic workloads by around 20%.
Haiku 5.5 targets high-volume work (summaries, classification, extraction, routing) and subagent roles under Opus 5.5 or Sonnet 5.5. It adds adjustable effort controls, a 1M-token context window, and availability on Claude.ai, the Claude API, Amazon Bedrock, Google Cloud, and Microsoft Foundry.
