At its Apsara Conference, Alibaba introduced the Zhenwu V900, calling it China’s most powerful AI chip with 3× the performance of its prior generation. The company also outlined plans for Qwen models at 5–10 trillion parameters and major data-center expansion.
Why it matters
Domestic chip capability is the constraint China is racing hardest to break. A credible high-end AI accelerator from Alibaba, paired with multi-trillion-parameter model plans, is a direct signal ahead of high-level US-China talks.
Alibaba unveiled the Zhenwu V900 at its annual Apsara Conference on September 22, describing it as China’s most powerful AI chip to date. CEO Eddie Wu said the chip delivers three times the performance of the previous-generation Zhenwu M890.
Alongside the hardware announcement, Alibaba said it is training next-generation Qwen models at the scale of 5 to 10 trillion parameters — a step up from the 2.4-trillion-parameter Qwen3.8-Max. The company also outlined plans to expand AI data-center capacity significantly, citing exponentially rising demand for compute.
The dual hardware-and-model push comes days before expected high-level discussions between Chinese and US leaders in which AI competition is expected to feature prominently. Export controls have limited Chinese access to leading-edge Nvidia silicon; domestic alternatives are therefore a strategic priority.
